BHP and China’s HBIS Group have teamed up to pilot carbon capture and utilization technologies at HBIS’ steel operations in China. The pilot will test technologies that can reduce CO2 emissions during steel production, including VPSA and two utilization technologies. BHP will also help HBIS develop and deploy absorptive desulfurization at HBIS ZXHT Hydrogen Metallurgy Demonstration Project. This project expands on the MoU signed by BHP and HBIS in 2021, and it will use the investment of up to US$15 million proposed in the MoU. HBIS Chairman Yu Yong said CCUS is a breakthrough technology for reducing carbon emissions from steel and is a key component in HBIS Group’s low-carbon technology roadmap.
