FIFA has been found to have made false and misleading statements about the environmental impact of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar by the Swiss Fairness Commission. The commission investigated claims that FIFA marketed the tournament as being carbon neutral and advised FIFA not to make unsubstantiated claims in the future. Complainants from five countries accused FIFA of making false statements about carbon neutrality at the World Cup. FIFA had promoted the Qatar tournament as the first completely climate neutral tournament and committed to reducing and offsetting carbon emissions it generated. However, the Swiss Fairness Commission said FIFA was not able to provide proof that the claims were accurate during the proceedings. The commission’s decision has been welcomed by environmental groups who accused FIFA of greenwashing.
