As part of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, the US Department of Energy has chosen 12 projects for negotiation that aim to expand the solar energy workforce in underserved and underrepresented communities. These projects will create career opportunities with good-paying jobs, and involve collaboration between industry, tribal organizations, unions, community colleges, and state and local governments. The program, which incorporates $10 million from President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, aligns with the administration’s goal of achieving a 100% clean electricity grid by 2035 while promoting economic opportunity across America. Although the solar industry is more diverse than some other energy industries, the overall energy workforce has lower representation of Hispanic, Black, and Indigenous workers. The chosen projects will directly address the issue of diversity and inclusivity in the industry.
