Anti-Scam Consumer Protection Charter

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) and the Hong Kong Association of Banks (HKAB) have collaborated to launch the Anti-Scam Consumer Protection Charter, which aims to raise public awareness about safeguarding credit card and personal information. The Charter has received support from major merchant institutions, the Hong Kong Police Force and the Consumer Council. All 23 card issuing banks and 15 merchant institutions in Hong Kong will participate in the Charter. The Participating Institutions commit to not sending instant electronic messages that contain hyperlinks to request personal and credit card information online. They will also provide appropriate channels for customers to verify the authenticity of messages, enhance staff training, and promote the message of “Beware of scams” through various channels. In addition, Participating Institutions have exchanged views on how to combat credit card scams and reminded the public to protect their personal and credit card information. The HKMA aims to strengthen the fight against credit card scams and offer better protection to the public in Hong Kong.
