The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has updated the Return of International Banking Statistics (IBS Return) and the completion instructions after consulting with industry associations. The changes reflect the Bank for International Settlements’ (BIS) updated guidelines on reporting international banking statistics and aim to improve consistency and provide more detailed guidance on reporting derivatives activities. To help authorized institutions (AIs) adapt to the new requirements, a short period of parallel reporting has been introduced, and AIs will be required to submit both the existing and revised IBS Returns for the reporting position of end-September 2024. After the parallel reporting period, only the revised IBS Return will be accepted, and AIs must submit it starting from the position of end-December 2024.
